Asian American International Film Festival Highlights LGBTQ Cinema Night Screenings

New York, NY – (July 17, 2012) – Asian CineVision (ACV) presenter of the 35th Asian American International Film Festival highlights LGBTQ themed film line-up by hosting LGBTQ Cinema Night on Friday, July 27. In collaboration with community partners from the LGBTQ community, AAIFF will screen SEÑORITA (The Philippines) directed by Vincent Sandoval who is also the co-screenwriter, co-producer, and leading actor in the film. In addition, the Festival will present short film program LOVE, INTERUPTED which includes FORTUNE COOKIE MAGIC TRICKS by Alex Chu, DOL by Andrew Ahn, MY SPIRITUAL MEDICINE by Liang Cheng, A HEART FELT by Jingyang Cheng and ONCE by Jie Chen. The Festival will run from July 25 through August 5, with screenings at Clearview Cinemas (260 West 23rd Street, New York, NY 10011), the Asia Society and Museum (725 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10021), and Museum of the Chinese in Americas (215 Centre Street, New York, NY10013)

SEÑORITA – Dir. Vincent Sandoval | Starring Vincent Sandoval, Publio Briones III | The Philippines

Wanting to quit sex work in Manila and start a new life, Sofia (Vincent Sandoval), a transgender woman, reinvents herself as Donna in the small town of Talisay to look after her friend’s son. But her past soon catches up with her when she gets involved in the complex politics of a local election, and her two lives cannot be kept apart.

Shorts Program: LOVE, INTERUPTED

FORTUNE COOKIE MAGIC TRICKS – Dir. Alex Chu | USA

A traditional Chinese father makes a desperate effort to “cure” his gay son’s homosexuality, but is interrupted by the sudden attack of zombies. This comic, absurd and disturbingly hilarious short reinterprets the definitions of stereotypical representation and storytelling.

DOL – Dir. Andrew Ahn | USA

Nick is a Korean-American man living in Los Angeles with his partner Brian and their dog Chloe. On attending his baby nephew’s ‘dol’, a traditional Korean first birthday party, he finds himself yearning for a life just beyond his reach.

MY SPIRITUAL MEDICINE – Dir. Liang Cheng | China

Two white-collar clerks sets up a private radio program in the bustling Shanghai. An Otaku lady lives in isolation. As the random fates of individuals are linked and changed by the radio wave, love, in all possible forms, burgeons.

A HEART FELT – Dir. Jingyang Cheng | USA

Setting off to his heart donor’s family with his long-estranged son, Mr. Thomas is caught by a surprise discovery which forces him to confront his prejudices and reevaluate his relationship with his son.

ONCE – Dir. Jie Chen | USA

Two small town Chinese girls meet at a summer English class. Diligent and exemplary student, Zhang, starts a special friendship with a shy tomboy, Xu. Lost in their emotions, they allow themselves to start a more intimate relationship.
