The monthly showcase features four films that show why the Malaysian independent cinema, driven largely by digital filmmaking, has emerged as one of the most exciting and dynamic forces in Asian cinema now.

Ah Peng arrives from the provinces to work in her aunt’s rice-stand in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. She is welcomed into the family like an older daughter and in particular strikes up a friendship with the youngest sister, Mei, who has a pen-pal relationship with a boyfriend she has not seen. Ah Peng herself has a boyfriend in Penang and calls him and her mother regularly from a payphone. She attracts the attention of John who starts courting her as he listens in on her phone calls and even as he shamelessly tells her certain stories, her loneliness slowly but surely draws her to the (seemingly) inevitable, fatal conclusion. A debut feature full of hushed emotions and complicated insights into the peculiar flow and pull that love exerts in women’s lives.
