BEFORE WE FALL IN LOVE AGAIN (NIAN NI RU XI) Director/Editor: James Lee Cast:
Amy Len, Pete Teo, Chye Chee Keong
Malaysia 2006 | 99 mins | narrative | Mandarin w/E.S.
With this initial installment in a planned trilogy on love, Malaysia’s best-known (albeit controversial) wunder-boy James Lee creates a most unusual love triangle. In a cleverly wrought story that suits his minimalist style perfectly, a missing woman is being drawn and discovered by two men—her lover and her husband—who reluctantly join forces in a futile attempt to locate her. When the moody black-and-white film (printed on color stock) suddenly bursts into bright colors and party mood in a-year-later coda, the minimalist stylization, dialogue and set-ups is shockingly and self-consciously contrasted to great effect. (Winner of Best Asean Feature Award, 2007 Bangkok International Film Festival)
